Celebrating its 27th year, The Minnesota High School Music Listening Contest is an independent not-for-profit
competition providing an ideal opportunity to enrich students' experiences with classical, ethnic, and popular music in a fun and competitive environment. In this statewide contest, students develop skills in active listening and critical analysis by learning to identify composers, cultures, periods and styles. The contest is open to all Minnesota high school students, 9-12th grade, from public, private, home schools, or music studios. During the fall, students form teams of three; participants receive a study guide and repertoire compact discs that contain all the musical selections they will need to compete effectively. All teams participate in regional competitions throughout the state in January; first- and second-place teams from each region advance to the Championship Competition in February. The registration fee is $90 per team (3 student guides with one coach's guide per school/organization). Study Guides are about 90 pages and each contains three repertoire CDs with narration. In addition, each student and coach receives a FREE one-year subscription to Naxos Music Library where they can access a playlist with entire pieces of the music featured in the Study Guide. Also, all participants will be given a FREE t-shirt at the regional contest. In addition, a practice test will be posted in December to help students prepare for the regional contests. Teams may register via mail (check payment) or online (credit card or PayPal payment) beginning in September. Study Guides are mailed immediately to registered and paid teams. 2014-2015 Dates and Deadlines Friday, October 17, 2014 - Registration Deadline Friday, Oct. 24, 2014 - Kickoff Event, noon - 1 p.m. at McNally Smith (no charge) (Teams are not required to attend.)
