Congratulations to State Champions: EDINA TEAM 1

Minnesota Music Listening Contest

Celebrating its 21st year, The Minnesota Music Listening Contest (MLC) is an independent not-for-profit competition providing an ideal opportunity to enrich students' experiences with classical, ethnic, and popular music in a fun and competitive environment.

In this statewide contest, students develop skills in active listening and critical analysis by learning to identify composers, cultures, periods and styles.

Teachers or coaches recruit three students to form a team. The teams receive a study guide and repertoire compact discs that contain all the musical selections they will need to compete effectively. All teams participate in regional competitions and first- and second-place teams advance to state competition.

State Champions: Edina Team 1 Friday, February 1, 2008

20 Teams participated in the State Competition of the 20th anniversary of the Minnesota High School Music Listening Contest. After 5 competitive state rounds, Edina's Team 1 (Regional Metro AA-II champions) edged out HEY Sartell (Regional homeschool champions) in two rounds of close College Bowl competition. Northfield Team 1 (Regional South AA Champions) beat Montevideo Team 1 (West A Champions) in a tiebreaker round for 3rd place.

Explanation of Scoring:

In State competition, just as in regionals, there are 5 rounds worth 20 points each. In the interest of producing a competitive contest and narrowing the top finishing teams, questions in each round are proportionally designed with a level of difficulty ranging from 1 (very easy - what everyone must know) to 3 (medium - what everyone should know) to 5 (extremely difficult - what very few people are likely to know). In other words each round contains 4 questions from each level of difficulty.

Difficulty levels:

1 Very Easy = 4/20 = 20%

2 Easy = 8/20 = 40%

3 Medium = 12/20 = 60%

4 Difficult = 16/20 = 80%

5 Extremely Difficult = 20 / 20 = 100%

The average overall score for all 20 teams at State was an impressive 77.20 out of 100 possible points. This means that most teams answered correctly the questions in the 1 through 4 difficulty levels. Any score over 60% is a good indication that the students are WELL prepared for College study.

Broken down by each round:

Round 1 - 18.30 Average / 9 perfect scores (Edina / HEY / Montevideo / St. Cloud Tech / Pine City / Duluth Denfield / Stillwater / Buffalo / Erin Wheaton Studio)

Round 2 - 15.60 Average / 1 perfect score (Edina)

Round 3 - 17.60 Average / 2 perfect scores (Montevideo / Pine Island)

Round 4 - 14.35 Average / Highest score 19 (Edina)

Round 5 - 11.35 Average / Highest score 18 (HEY / Southwest)

Scores for the college bowl competition each question is worth 10 points but a missed answer results in a loss of 5 points (but no team can fall below zero (0).

Round 1
Edina - 45
HEY 25

Round 2
Edina - 70
HEY - 65

FINAL
Edina - 115
HEY - 90

Only 25 points separated the two teams (i.e. 2 1/2 questions) making this yet another nailbiting competition.

All Students who participated in the Minnesota High School Music Listening Contest should be very proud of their own accomplishments. The Regional and State Competitions represent only a small portion of the mission of MLC. No matter how low a score may have been in the competition, the students still demonstrated that they learned something.

Heated College Bowl Round earns St. Cloud 6th Win

Augsburg College Minneapolis, MN - For the 6th time in their school's history, St. Cloud Tech High School earned the Championship Title for the Music Listening Contest narrowly defeating a fiercely competitive and well-prepared Edina High School team who had to settle for second place for the second year in a row. Last years Championship team, Stillwater High School finished third. Minnesota Public Radio's Steve Staruch emceed the days events and competition which began with a luncheon for the top 18 teams from across the state. William Schrikel, Music Director of the St. Cloud Symphony Orchestra, The Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra as well as Double Bassist and Associate conductor of the Minneosota Orchestra provided the keynote address.

The difficult task of judging the competition fell to Dr. Matthew Bribitzer-Stull, professor of Music Theory at the University of Minnesota; Mindy Ratner, Minnesota Public Radio; and Christian McGuire, MLC Musicologist and Instructor of Music History at the McNally-Smith College of Music. "With all of the teams so well prepared, the final state competition scores are so close that virtually any team has a chance to become the winner." said McGuire. In fact last years competition was so close that 5 teams vied for a college bowl berth via the sudden death mystery round tiebreaker with Edina winning out to meet Stillwater in the 2006 college bowl championship. Stillwater won that year by the margin of 1 question.

"The important thing to remember is that all of the students who compete at all levels of the tournament should be admired and congratulated for their efforts. As judges, we know they have learned more than the results of the contest demonstrate. The active learning strategies they have developed in preparation will surely have a positive impact upon the future success in life both within and outside the field of music."
